Strategic Rushing vs Maxing: What Changed in 2026

From mistake to default

A returning player who had been away for three years posted on r/ClashOfClans asking why rushing is now celebrated when it used to be frowned on. The replies were blunt: strategic rushing has been the efficient route for years, and recent updates only made it more so. A similar thread, started by a player who found an official tips article on Google Play suggesting a strategic rush, filled with comments along the lines of "everything in this game rewards rushing now."

The opposite view still exists. A popular post from a maxer saying they will never upgrade a Town Hall without finishing almost everything drew many players who feel the same, and a thread asking why rushers get so much hate mixed old stigma with real complaints from clan leaders. The honest picture is that rushing is efficient for getting to the top Town Hall and maxing it, and maxing each level is a valid choice if you enjoy it. Several commenters put it simply: play the way you have fun.

The rules that make rushing efficient

Three mechanics come up again and again in these threads, and each can be checked against the Clash of Clans Wiki.

Magic items scale with upgrade length. A Book of Building instantly finishes any ongoing building upgrade, and Books of Heroes, Fighting and Spells do the same for their upgrades. Hammers complete an upgrade instantly at no cost. A book used on a two-day upgrade saves two days; the same book on a fifteen-day upgrade at a high Town Hall saves fifteen. Players who rush say they save their books, hammers and potions for the longest timers, which only exist at the higher Town Halls.

Ranked league floors rise with Town Hall level. You can never be ranked below the floor for your Town Hall, and upgrading your Town Hall during a Ranked week moves you straight to the new floor. A TH17 starts no lower than P.E.K.K.A 23, a TH18 no lower than Titan 26. Higher leagues mean bigger league bonuses and Star Bonus rewards, including ore. Several commenters argued this is now the biggest single reason to rush, because ore is the slowest resource in the game.

Potions cover the gaps. A Hero Potion raises Heroes and Pets to the maximum level for your Town Hall for one hour, and a Power Potion does the same for troops, spells and siege machines. Rushers in the threads described using these for Clan War League attacks while their real levels catch up.

Strategic rushing is not skipping everything

Almost every pro-rushing comment came with the same warning: there is a difference between strategic rushing and what players call bum rushing. Strategic rushing means upgrading the Town Hall early while keeping offense strong and the important defenses reasonable. Bum rushing means upgrading the Town Hall with almost nothing else done. Players were consistently negative about the second kind, describing TH18s with level 10 Heroes or level 1 defenses that cannot win a war attack or hold a defense.

When a TH11 player asked whether to rush straight to TH18, the most detailed replies converged on a few priorities:

  • Keep offense ahead. Laboratory, Army Camps, Clan Castle, Barracks, Spell Factory, Blacksmith, Pet House and the Workshop you use.
  • Keep your main war army and at least one strong Hero usable while you climb.
  • Bring core defenses along; skip traps, collectors and storages until later. A Gold Pass makes storage upgrades less urgent.
  • Plan for merge requirements at TH16 and TH17, which naturally slow a rush down. Our TH16 and TH17 guides cover what those merges need.
  • Pick a few Pets that fit your armies and ignore the rest until later.
  • Join a clan that accepts rushed accounts so you can still war while you catch up.

What rushing costs you

The downsides players mentioned are real, even if they are smaller than they used to be.

  • Classic Clan Wars. One detailed reply argued that rushing to TH18 is good for Ranked, CWL and progression speed but bad for classic war, because you take on defensive war weight at its least efficient while your offense is behind.
  • Clan rules. Some clans do not accept rushed bases. Players were split on whether that is fair, but agreed the clan's rules apply.
  • Equipment. Starry ore and epic equipment levels do not jump when your Town Hall does. One commenter warned that rushing straight to TH18 leaves you with equipment far below what TH18 attacks expect.
  • Learning curve. Several commenters said rushing works best for players who already know the game, and that a brand new player may struggle to learn attacks against bases far above their army.
  • Burnout. A wall of unfinished upgrades can feel worse than a finished level, which is why some players suggest pausing at TH15 or TH17 for a while.

Where to pause

Players disagreed about where a rush should stop. One view was to rush to TH15, stay a month, then rush to TH17 and stay two or three months before TH18. Another reply argued TH15 is a poor stopping point because TH16 slows you down anyway, and that once you are at TH17 you may as well go to TH18 for the higher league and better book value. A TH17 player who asked whether to continue was told both things: stay if you buy books from offers and enjoy finishing levels, move on if you want the league and star bonus increase.

Old rushed accounts sometimes stopped at TH11 or TH12. Replies suggested that was usually returning players or people keeping an alternate account for Siege Machine donations, not a strategy.

Choosing for yourself

If your goal is to reach and max the newest Town Hall quickly, rank higher in Ranked and play CWL at high levels, strategic rushing is the efficient path, and the community's experience supports that. If you enjoy completing each Town Hall, play classic wars in a clan that cares about weight, or are new to the game, maxing or a slower semi-rush is a perfectly good choice. Either way, keep your offense strong: every player in these threads agreed that is what makes an account useful.

Frequently asked questions

Most players say the opposite. Higher Town Halls let you attack at a higher level in CWL rosters, and Hero and Power Potions raise levels to your Town Hall's maximum for an hour. The concern is mainly defense in classic wars.
