Ranked Battles: Sign-Up, Demotion and Taking Breaks

The questions players keep asking

Since Ranked Battles arrived in October 2025, r/ClashOfClans has had a steady stream of the same questions. Will I be demoted if I do not sign up? Why did I drop two leagues when I skipped one week? Is it better to attack early or late? A thread titled "How to avoid ranked battles" showed how much conflicting information was going around: some players said they skipped weeks with no demotion, while others reported dropping from Legend to Electro 32 after skipping.

Part of that confusion came from rule changes. Supercell's April 2026 update notes changed inactivity rules and the number of battles in several leagues, so older advice no longer applies. Here is how it works now.

How a Ranked week works

Ranked Battles is unlocked at Town Hall 7. According to the Clash of Clans Wiki, signing up places you in a group of up to 100 players in the same league. If you were unranked, you start at your league floor, the lowest league your Town Hall level allows. Each league has a fixed number of attacks and defenses per weekly tournament, from 6 in the Skeleton leagues up to 30 in Legend II. After the April 2026 update, Supercell lists 12 battles for Titan, 14 for Dragon, 18 for Electro and 24 for Legend III.

Ranked attacks are stricter than normal battles. There is no Next button. You confirm your army on a screen like the Clan War one, and once you enter you cannot back out; the attack is logged regardless. Temporary event troops and spells cannot be used, even if they are in your army. You also cannot revenge a Ranked opponent, and Ranked attacks never give the defender a Shield.

Trophies you earn during the week cannot be lost. At the end, everyone in the group is ranked by trophies; the top share is promoted one league and the bottom share is demoted one league. The percentages differ by league and are much smaller near the top: the wiki lists 5% promotion for Legend III and 3% for Legend II.

League floors and Town Hall upgrades

You can never be demoted below your league floor. The wiki gives these floors: TH13 Wizard 11, TH14 Valkyrie 14, TH15 Witch 17, TH16 Golem 20, TH17 P.E.K.K.A 23 and TH18 Titan 26. If you upgrade your Town Hall during a tournament and you are below the new floor, you are moved up to that floor when the week ends. This is the only way to move more than one league at a time.

That rule is a large part of why players connect Ranked with rushing. Commenters in several threads noted that upgrading the Town Hall moves you up leagues faster than winning promotions one week at a time. A TH17 player in another thread asked whether to keep rushing to TH18 and was told the floor would not change much, but the higher star bonus from climbing into Electro League would.

Skipping weeks without losing your league

Supercell's April 2026 notes changed inactivity rules. You can now skip signing up for 4 weeks without being demoted. After that first demotion, you drop one league for every further 4 weeks of inactivity until you reach your Town Hall floor, and 4 weeks after reaching the floor you become unranked. The game also shows a countdown timer to the exact moment of demotion. Signing up but making no attacks still counts as inactive; the wiki says you need at least one attack in a season to be counted as active.

This is why players now describe routines like doing Ranked once every three or four weeks. One player in a thread about quitting Ranked said they sign up once a month to keep Legend II; others said they sign up every third week to keep their star bonus level. Before April 2026 the decay period was one week, which explains the older reports of surprise demotions.

Being unranked is not a disaster for farming. The wiki notes that unranked players still earn league bonuses and star bonuses, just at reduced amounts compared to the league floor. Your league level is what sets the size of those bonuses, including the ore in the daily Star Bonus, so most players try to hold a league rather than drop out completely.

Early, late or spread out?

A thread asking when people do their Ranked attacks got every possible answer, but most fit one of three routines:

  • All at once with a Clan Castle cake, then put Heroes back on upgrade for the rest of the week. Many players do this because Clan Castle refills between attacks are slow.
  • Upgrade Heroes through the week and attack on the last day, which some players say reduces stress about the leaderboard.
  • A few attacks a day, leaving one for the final day to see where you stand.

Timing and defenses

Some players believe signing up late in the week means fewer defenses and therefore fewer chances to be tripled. The wiki's rule for missing defenses is worth knowing here: any defense you did not receive is credited at the average trophies of the defenses you did take. So taking fewer defenses does not automatically help or hurt you; what matters is how your base performs on the ones you get.

For Heroes, remember that Ranked uses a snapshot of your chosen layout, so your Heroes still defend while upgrading. Attacking is different. An upgrading Hero cannot attack. In February 2026 a bug briefly let players attack with upgrading Heroes, and Supercell confirmed in the thread that it was a bug. Players with six Heroes at TH15 and above often keep two upgrading at all times and rotate them, or do all their Ranked attacks in one session and put every Hero down afterwards.

If Ranked feels like a chore

"Stopped playing Ranked" posts are common, especially from Legend II and III players who feel promotion depends on luck. You do not have to push. Several players said they use Ranked only for loot, since every Ranked base has a fixed amount generated by the game, or as a place to test new armies while holding their league. Others farm with one-star attacks in Electro 33 and finish mid-table. Under the current rules, staying where you are takes far less effort than climbing.

Frequently asked questions

Not for the first 4 weeks. After that you drop one league, then one more for each additional 4 weeks, until you reach your Town Hall floor. Four weeks after that you become unranked.
